The hot metal car, also known as a bottle car, is a specialized piece of rolling stock essential to the steel industry. Developed to enhance the efficiency of the steel-making process, these distinctively shaped, multi-axle rail cars are heavily insulated and used to transport molten iron from the blast furnace directly to the steel plant where it is refined into steel. Because the transpot must occur before the metal solidifies, hot metal trains oftn operate on highly prioritized, short-haul industrial routes, interspersed with empty buffer cars for safety and weight distribution on the rails.
